Lee County is known for its world-class tarpon fishing, recreational boating and championship golf courses, along with its rich history as the winter home and laboratory for Thomas Edison. It has long been the spring training headquarters for the Boston Red Sox and the Minnesota Twins.
Sanibel and Captiva have been stopovers for the rich and famous, including one special cartoonist. Jay Norwood “Ding” Darling helped create the 6,400-acre national wildlife refuge that still bears his name on Sanibel. Other notable visitors include Teddy Roosevelt, Charles and Anne Morrow Lindbergh, and more. From artist Robert Rauschenberg to weatherman Willard Scott, the famous still seek refuge at this preserve for wildlife and the human soul. Visitors to both islands enjoy the languid pace of island life, great restaurants, theater and museums.
Naples is well known for its high-end shopping, world-class culture and sophisticated dining. But it’s also a family destination that appeals to nature lovers and beach aficionados. Fifth Avenue South and Third Street South are the focal points for Naples shopping in the historic downtown area, with numerous art galleries, chic clothing boutiques and home décor shops.
